Liberalisation of foreign direct investment (FDI) has been an essential element in the increasing internationalisation of the economy, and has enhanced France's image as an FDI host country. Thanks to a surge in direct investment flows since 1984-1985, France has become the third-ranking country in the OECD area in terms of inward FDI and fourth in terms of outward FDI at end 1994.
