Since time immemorial, the presence of watering holes has made Palmyra a place for settlement in this arid region. The concentration of prehistoric sites in this limited geographic area contradicts the idea of little occupation of the steppic zones during these periods. Without doubt we should envision broader cultural areas each with their own distinct influence, found within a circulation dynamic composed of movements, contact and exchanges for which the archaeological record provides the only evidence of the level of complexity.
