Une histoire de guéret
Née au VII<sup>e</sup> siècle autour du monastère fondé par l'ermite Pardoux, à 3 km de l'ancienne cité gallo-romaine du Puy-de-Gaudy, Guéret devient, serrée autour de son église et protégée dans ses remparts médiévaux, une cité commerçante et prospère. Devenue au XV<sup>e</sup> siècle la capitale de la Haute-Marche, son rôle judiciaire et administratif se développe sous l'Ancien régime, puis se confirme sous la Révolution et au XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle. Un riche patrimoine architectural témoigne de cette longue histoire : De l'Hôtel des Monneyroux au Présidial, de l'Hôtel de Madot à la Sénatorerie, les cheminements sont nombreux pour redécouvrir, dans la Creuse, cette cité de caractère.
Guéret est la patrie de l'historien Antoine Varillas, de l'avocat et érudit Louis Lacrocq, de l'écrivain Marcel Jouhandeau qui l'a immortalisée sous le nom de Chaminadour. Sans oublier les artistes qui, d'Ingres à Louis-Léon Desjardins, des Leloir à Fernand Maillaud, ont construit, dès le XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle, l'image sensible d'une ville que reflète désormais la collection précieuse de son musée d'art et d'archéologie.
Les historiens Jacques Roger, Philippe Loy, Geneviève Parelon et Daniel Dayen, réunis autour de Guy Avizou, nous invitent à parcourir ce riche passé de la ville, depuis les origines jusqu'à l'aube du XXI<sup>e</sup> siècle, illustré par plus de 100 documents souvent inédits, réalisant ainsi la première grande Histoire de Guéret .
A history of guéret
Guéret, which came into existence in the 6<sup>th</sup> century around the monastery founded by Pardoux, an anchorite, a mere two miles away from the Gallo-Roman Puy-de-Gaudy settlement, clustered around its church. Thus, under the protection of its mediaeval walls, it became a prosperous trading place. Taking advantage of its status as the capital of Haute-Marche in the 16<sup>th</sup> century it saw its administrative and judiciary roles enhanced during the Monarchy, a position confirmed during the Revolution and later in the 19<sup>th</sup> century. Its rich architectural heritage bears witness to this long history : the visitors'steps will take them around the town, starting from Monneyroux Hall to the Présidial , from the de Madot Hall to the Sénatorerie , among other itineraries.
Guéret was the birthplace of Antoine Varillas, a historian, of Louis Lacrocq, a barrister and a man of learning, Marcel Jouhandeau, a writer who immortalized the town as Chaminadour. Not to forget the artists who, from Ingres to Louis-Léon Desjardins, from the Leloir dynasty to Fernand Maillaud, have conveyed the sensitive character of the town, displayed in its museum of Art and Archacology.
Guy Azizou has coordinated the work of several historians : Jacques Roger, Philippe Loy, Geneviève Parelon and Daniel Dayen. This team invites us to scan the rich heritage of the town, from its origins to the beginning of the 21<sup>st</sup> century in a volume displaying over a hundred documents, many of them never disclosed before, thus making this book the first complete History of Guéret.
