Transition periods as founding pillars of democracy and peace

The purpose of this book is to explain why, after the occurrence of unconstitutional changes of government (coup d'État), a period of transition is necessary. The author sustains the view that periods of transition present opportunities to not only set up the structural foundations of the soul of the nation, but also to establish solid democratic institutions and durable peace. He elaborates on a number of subsidiary issues : the nature and structure of the transitional institutions and their role in the restoration of normalcy; constitutional order ; and the rule of law. The author believes that the success of a democratic transition
is founded on the way transitional institutions are organised, as well as on their commitment to peace and to democratic values.
