Oceans cover 70 per cent of the globe's surface, are key to both weather and climate change, and profoundly affect economic performance in many areas. Thanks to advances in basic research in oceanography, it is possible today to envisage observation of the global ocean, a monumental task, and one that is far more difficult than studying the atmosphere.
