Ce décor original et profus, demeuré inchangé, n'avait jamais fait l'objet d'une étude scientifique. Dans le présent ouvrage, Corinne Charles nous livre une analyse minutieuse du mobilier composé par Victor Hugo, qu'elle situe dans son rapport à l'histoire du meuble et de l'architecture d'intérieur. Elle révèle ainsi comment, tour à tour, l'écrivain se laissa inspirer par le goût de son temps ou sut se montrer visionnaire, anticipant là encore certaines orientations artistiques de la fin du XIX^e et du XX^e siècle.

Few people are aware of the wealth and uniqueness of Victor Hugo's creative genius in the area of interior decoration. Yet, in his Guernsey home, Hauteville House, where he lived from 1855 to 1870, Hugo accomplished what can only be considered a work of art in its own right - a work anchored in the deepest recesses of his creative universe. This original and profuse décor, which had remained unchanged, has, until now, not been the subject of any scientific study. Here, Corinne Charles provides us with a detailed analysis of the furniture designed by Hugo, and carefully situates that work with respect to the history of furniture and interior architecture.
