The International Energy Agency (IEA) was created in 1974 following the major oil shock of 1973. Its main initial objective was to ensure effective response to any further disruption of oil supplies. While much has changed since that time and the IEA is constantly adapting to new circumstances, safeguarding the energy security of its 23 member countries remains the central mission of the IEA.
