I keep a portrait of her, made by Mapplethorpe in the early 70's, hanging on the wall next to my bed. I'm tempted to say that everything was already there in this little Polaroid, that it would be impossible to add anything. But Patti Smith is like the wind, she blows life and energy on you. Hearing her, seeing her and - why not ? - photographing her. She is cheerfulness, pain, affection, desperation, maybe happiness...
