Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates contain about 65% of the world's proven oil reserves and about 31% of the world's proven natural gas reserves. In 1994 these six nations had crude oil production capacity of about 21 million barrels per day (mbd) with plans to expand capacity to about 25 mbd by the year 2000.
