This IEA report provides a comprehensive assessment of the energy policies of Portugal with recommendations on how policies could be improved. An almost decade-long process of deregulation of the Portuguese energy sector culminated in the early 1990s, when the electricity sector was restructured and legislation was passed to introduce competition in the power business, starting in 1997.
