Les photographies publiées dans ce volume proviennent de l'album personnel du prince Georges, premier Haut Commissaire de Crète lors de la période de l'indépendance (1898-1913). L'album comprend des photographies affichant des moments de la vie publique et privée de Georges en Crète lors des premiers mois de son mandat, tels qu'ils furent captés par l'appareil photographique de Périclès Diamandopoulos, son photographe officiel, ou parfois par Georges lui-même ou les membres de sa suite. Les 193 photographies reproduites dans cet ouvrage constituent des témoignages inestimables pour une période critique de l'histoire de la Crète : elles révèlent le rôle joué par le prince Georges dans l'île aussitôt après la fin du long règne ottoman, en même temps qu'elles préservent la physionomie de l'île et de ses habitants, pour lesquels le Haut Commissaire symbolisait une époque transitoire, une époque qu'ils espéraient voir bientôt terminée - avec l'annexion de la Crète à l'État grec.

The photographs published in this volume belong to the personal album of Prince George, first High Commissioner of Crete during the period of the island's Autonomy (1898-1913). This album contains photographs showing instances of the Prince's public and private life during the first months of his Commission. The photographs were taken by Pericles Diamandopoulos, the Prince's official photographer, but also by the Prince himself or by members of his retinue. The 193 photographs in the present publication are important documents of a critical period in the history of Crete : they shed light on aspects of Prince George's role in the government of the island after centuries of Ottoman rule and they also preserve important features of the physiognomy of the land and its inhabitants who saw the High Commissioner as the symbol of a transitional era that would soon reach its end leading to the union of Crete with the Greek State.
