Parmi les grandes surfaces inexplorées, avant le cosmos et le fond des océans, c'est sans

doute le fond de nous-mêmes qui reste le territoire le plus lointain. Seule une petite

délégation a reçu l'autorisation d'aller y plonger les deux mains, pour en ramener une boue

mystérieuse : les artistes, ces scaphandriers de l'inconscient.

Gilles Barbier n'est pas un débutant dans la profession, il a même l'étoffe des héros, ceux

qui n'ont pas peur de se coltiner les symboles, les poncifs et les démons personnels.

Imaginer une rétrospective de Gilles Barbier relevait presque de la gageure ; le parti pris a

été d'offrir aux spectateurs une traversée dans le labyrinthe créatif qui caractérise son

oeuvre. L'ensemble de l'exposition Écho Système peut ainsi être pensé comme un corps

dont les organes (espaces) constituent une forme de vie, voire une méthode créative de

survie contemporaine.

Among the greatest unexplored surfaces, before the cosmos and the ocean floor, the most

distant territory is undoubtedly the depths of ourselves. Only a very small delegation is

given permission to plunge both hands in to bring back mysterious silt : the artists, divers

of the unconscious.

Gilles Barbier is not a beginner in the profession ; he is made of the same stuff as those

not afraid to wrestle symbols, clichés and personal demons. Conceiving a retrospective of

Gilles Barbier almost fell to the challenge ; the approach has been to offer spectators

a journey through the creative labyrinth that characterises his work. The entirety of the

exhibition Écho Système can be thought of as a body whose organs (spaces) constitute

a form of life, for observing a creative method of contemporary survival.
