La malaria, appelée paludisme dans la plupart des pays francophones, tient son nom de l'Italien et signifie « mauvais air ». Pendant longtemps les Romains pensaient que cette fièvre était causée par l'air nauséabond respiré dans les marais. En réalité, c'est la piqûre d'un moustique, appelé anophèle, pullulant dans ces marais, qui transmet le parasite responsable de la maladie. Devenue l'un des pires fléaux contemporains, elle est responsable de 1 à 3 millions de morts par an dont 80% en Afrique subsaharienne.

Toujours avec un profond souci esthétique, William Daniels photographie cette terrible pandémie qui frappe les plus démunis d'Ouganda au Sierra Leone, du Burkina Faso à Calcutta.

À travers ses clichés, il nous raconte les pluies abondantes annonciatrices de nouveaux cas de paludisme, les cliniques où sont soignés tant bien que mal femmes enceintes et enfants, les distributions de moustiquaires imprégnées d'insecticide... Et surtout le combat qu'il reste à mener contre cette maladie.

Malaria (known as « paludisme » in most French-speaking countries) takes its name from the Italian, and means literally « bad air ». For a long time the Romans believed the fever was caused by the putrid air of marshlands, whereas the real cause is the Anopheles mosquito, prolific in these marshy areas ; the female transmits the parasite responsible for malaria. Now one of today's major global scourges, malaria causes between 1 and 3 million deaths per year, of which 80% occur in sub-Saharan Africa.

Without ever abandoning his deep aesthetic concerns, William Daniels has photographed this terrible pandemic that always strikes the most underprivileged populations, from Uganda to Sierra Leone, from Burkina Faso to Calcutta.

His photographs tell of the abundant rainfall heralding new outbreaks of malaria, the clinics where pregnant women and their children are treated insofar as circumstances allow, the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets... Above all, they tell us of the battle that still lies ahead before this scourge can be eradicated.
