Two hundred photographs, taken from all fronts

throughout World War II, have been culled from the

Magnum Photos archive to provide a moving testament

to the defining moments in each of the wartime

arenas. From the deserts of Africa to the snowy steppes

of Russia, and from the jungle of the Pacific islands to

the Italian mountain tops, the greatest photographers

of the era risked their lives to bear witness to the

world-changing events of the war and to the heroic

acts of courage that arose from the ashes. Years later,

these iconic images have lost none of their power and

are imprinted forever in our collective memory.
