Le modèle endormi, allégorie de l'abandon, est un sujet de
réflexion pour les artistes depuis la Renaissance. De l'aspect
poétique et secret du rêve à sa dimension éminemment érotique
les artistes ont su livrer leur part intérieure de ce thème devenu
un archétype de la peinture comme de la sculpture.
Il a inspiré les plus grands, tels que Bonnard, Vallotton, Vuillard,
Matisse, Picasso, Brancusi, Renoir, Van Dongen et tant d'autres.
À travers une sélection d'une cinquantaine d'oeuvres souvent
majeures, le catalogue montre la filiation de ce sujet de la fin du
XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle des symbolistes et Nabis jusqu'aux années cinquante.
The sleeping model, an allegory for abandonment, has been an
artist preoccupation since the Renaissance. From the poetic
and secret aspect of dreams to the purely erotic dimension,
artists have succeeded in expressing their innermost thoughts
on this subject which has become an archetypal theme in both
painting and sculpture alike.
It has inspired some of the greatest artists, such as Bonnard,
Vallotton, Vuillard, Matisse, Picasso, Brancusi, Renoir, Van
Dongen and so many others. Through a selection of around
fifty often major works, the catalogue shows the derivation of
this subject from the end of the nineteenth century with the
Symbolists and the Nabis and up until the 1950s.
