La ville d'Héliopolis d'Égypte a, de tout temps, exercé une fascination sur ses visiteurs.

D'aucuns y reconnurent les lieux de résidence des fameux prêtres-magiciens des

pharaons, ceux-là même qui avaient prodigué leur enseignement à quelques grands

hommes de la Grèce antique ; d'autres, les lieux d'épisodes fameux des Saintes Écritures ;

d'autres encore, des vestiges étranges aux vertus miraculeuses.

Cet ouvrage réunit les descriptions d'Héliopolis puis de ses ruines par des pèlerins,

voyageurs, géographes et autres historiens d'horizons culturels différents : Grecs,

Romains, Musulmans, Juifs, Chrétiens d'Orient et d'Occident. Ces témoignages, compris

entre le V^e siècle av. J.-C. et la toute fin du XVIII^e siècle, nous renseignent sur l'aspect du

site et de ses monuments au fil des siècles, sur son histoire et, par-dessus tout, sur les

légendes bâties autour de ce haut lieu universel.

The city of Heliopolis in Egypt has always fascinated its visitors. Some recognized the

residence of the famous magician-priests of the Pharaohs, those who gave their teachings

to some great men of ancient Greece; others, the places of famous episodes of the

Holy Scriptures; even others, some strange remains with miraculous virtues.

This book gathers the descriptions of Heliopolis and its ruins by pilgrims, travelers,

geographers and historians from different cultural backgrounds: Greeks, Romans,

Muslims, Jewishs, Christians of Orient and Occident. These testimonies, from the 5th

century BC to the end of the 18th century AC, tell us about the appearance of the site

and its monuments over the centuries, its history and above all, the legends developed

around this universal symbolic place.
