La belle et la bête

La Belle et la Bête est le fruit d'une rencontre entre Kent Monkman, artiste autochtone d'origine crie, voix singulière et puissante de l'art canadien, et le musée des Confluences de Lyon. L'artiste a prélevé des collections du musée dix oeuvres et artéfacts représentatifs d'objets et d'animaux désormais dépossédés des pouvoirs que leur attribuent les cultures autochtones. Il en fait ici le coeur d'une exposition de peintures historiques et mythologiques qui interroge les relations entre les animaux et les hommes, et qui propose une réflexion aussi inédite que profonde sur la notion d'appropriation culturelle.

Beauty and the beasts

Beauty and the Beasts is the fruit of the encounter between Kent Monkman, an Indigenous artist of Cree descent, a singular and powerful voice in Canadian art, and the Musée des Confluences in Lyon. The artist selected from the museum collections ten works and artifacts representative of objects and animals now dispossessed of the powers that Indigenous cultures attributed to them. He makes them the heart of an exhibition of historical and mythological paintings that examines the relationship between animals and humans, and invites us to reflect upon the concept of cultural appropriation.
