La position de Jean-Pierre Buffi sur la scène architecturale est singulière puisque, depuis une dizaine d'années, il exerce autant en Italie qu'en France.

Cette assise transfrontalière a nourri sa production depuis l'origine. Formé à la faculté d'architecture de Florence - intense foyer d'excitation intellectuelle et artistique -, puis, en France, auprès de Jean Prouvé qui lui communique cet amour incommensurable de la justesse et de la qualité constructive, il se révèle un homme du « faire » qui a toujours associé sa pratique à la réflexion théorique à travers un engagement sans faille dans l'enseignement. Son travail, tout entier tourné vers la passion de construire, est présenté dans ce livre sous différents angles - lesquels témoignent de la richesse de sa démarche et de la diversité des échelles de projets abordées :

Des Collines de la Défense au musée national de Préhistoire en Dordogne, de l'université d'Avignon au Front de parc de Bercy à Paris, de la médiathèque de Toulouse à l'Aera Vitali de Turin, du complexe culturel de San Miniato au Grand Bazar de Lyon : c'est à une soixantaine de projets et réalisations que s'est attelée ces deux dernières décennies l'agence Buffi Associés.

Jean-Pierre Buffi has assumed an atypical stance on the architectural scene in recent years, working in Italy and in France. But, border-crossing has been with him since the beginning.

He qualified at the faculty of architecture in Florence at a time when it was a hot-bed of intellectual and artistic activity, and completed his training in Paris, working with Jean Prouvé, who passed on to him a love of accuracy and quality in construction. And while he first came to the fore as a « doer », his practice has always been filled out by theoretical research, via a long-standing commitment to teaching.

His entire being is fired by a passion for building, presented here from different viewpoints, all of which testify to the wealth of resources brought to the projects he has handled and their diversity of scale :

- building the void ;

- building with lights and materials ;

- building with technique ;

- building the city ;

- building with landscape ;

- building for living.

From the « hills » project at La Défense to the National museum of Prehistory in Dordogne, from the university of Avignon to the Bercy park-front redevelopment in Paris, from the mediathèque in Toulouse to the Aera Vitali in Turin, and from the San Miniato cultural complex to the Grand Bazar in Lyons : in the past two decades some sixty major projects and works have kept the Buffi and Associates office busy.
