délaissées et des quartiers paupérisés, à y expérimenter de

nouveaux modes d'appropriation, les créateurs participent

tant à la transformation d'un quartier qu'au renouvellement

d'un territoire. Par leur diversité et leur dynamisme, ils

contribuent aussi au développement de villes qui prennent

de plus en plus conscience de leur rôle économique.

Les cas de Berlin, Birmingham, Lausanne, Lyon, Montréal,

Nantes et Montpellier sont observés et analysés par

différents experts internationaux spécialisés dans la

culture et l'action culturelle. Les expériences menées

permettent de comprendre les enjeux politiques, sociaux et

économiques qui poussent ces villes à accorder une priorité

grandissante aux activités créatives, aux productions et

Creators, whether visual artists, musicians, actors

or graphic designers, and the creative industry as

a whole, play a vital role in the transformation

of the contemporary city. Their ability to not only

inhabit previously abandoned spaces and poor

neighbourhoods, but to bring them to life and

use them as testing grounds for new forms of

appropriation, allows creators to participate in both

the transformation of individual quarters and the

regeneration of entire urban areas. By virtue of their

diversity and dynamism, they contribute towards the

development of cities that are becoming increasingly

aware of their potential economic role.

Case studies of Berlin, Birmingham, Lausanne, Lyon,

Montreal, Nantes and Montpellier are examined

and analysed by a variety of international experts,

all specialising in culture and cultural action. The

experiences of these cities help to throw light on the

political, social and economic issues driving them

to attach an ever-increasing importance to creative

activities, and to artistic production and performance

in all forms, whether temporary or more long-term.
