Active labour market policies are designed to assist the unemployed in searching and applying for jobs successfuly. Spending public money for this purpose is generally considered to be more useful than providing only "passive" income support to the unemployed. Several studies suggest, however, that many active labour market programmes do not achieve their objectives.
