Biomechanics and medicine in swimming 9 : proceedings of the IXth World symposium on biomechanics and medicine in swimming, University of Saint-Etienne, France, 21-23 June, 2002

The IX<sup>th</sup> International World Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming
was held in Saint-Etienne in France from June 21 - 23 2002, under the auspices of the
World Commission of Sport Biomechanics and the Steering Group of Biomechanics and
Medicine in Swimming. The main conference organisers were the Laboratoire de Physiologie
of the Medical Faculty and Service d'Exploration Fonctionnelle Cardio-Respiratoire et
Médecine du Sport of Saint-Etienne Hospital. The conference was a joint effort with several
other organisations as well. The Department of Physical Education of the University of Saint-Etienne,
the City of Saint-Etienne, the Conseil Général de la Loire, the Conseil Régional Rhône-Alpes,
the Association des Chercheurs en Activités Physiques et Sportives, the French
Swimming Federation, the INSERM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Société de la Loire de
Médecine du Sport and the Société Française de Médecine du Sport were the main public
sponsors of the Symposium.
The Symposium itself was organised into 27 scientific sessions representing 200 communications.
In 11 of them, lectures on specific topics were given by Ulrich Persyn, Leuven,
Belgium, Patrick Pelayo, Lille, France, Barry Wilson, Dunedin, New Zealand, Iñigo Mujika,
Bilbao, Spain, Tim Noakes, Cape Town, South Africa, Yannick Guézennec, Paris, France, David
Pyne, Canberra, Australia, Jean-Claude Barthélémy, Saint-Etienne, France, Gilles Cometti,
Dijon, France, Jean-Michel Vergnon, Saint-Etienne, France and Dominique Gazielly, Paris,
France. Seven Scientific demonstrations were given at a pool-side session. The Symposium
included 27 sessions with 110 oral presentations and 91 poster.
Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming IX are the proceedings of the IXth World
Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming. This book represents all the major
disciplines of swimming Science with a total of 98 articles. The contents have been organised
in 12 chapters arranged by topic to help the reader find papers closely related to one another
within the same chapter. Each paper was subjected to a scientific review by 2 or 3 internationally
recognised experts and scientists.
