Les chasseurs Nagô du Royaume de Bantè, fondé

au XIV^e siècle, forment une confrérie placée

sous l'autorité d'un roi traditionnel. Le Royaume

est situé au coeur du Bénin dans la Forêt de Bantè,

région des collines. Chacun des vingt-sept villages

composant le Royaume possède des chefs

chasseurs. Aux dépens de la chasse au grand gibier,

aujourd'hui abandonnée, les chasseurs se

sont mués en acteurs essentiels de la préservation

de leur environnement : par la défense de la

Forêt d'une part, par la protection de leur culture

d'autre part. Dépositaires d'une tradition intimement

liée à leur environnement, ils détiennent

notamment une connaissance exceptionnelle de

traitements à base de plantes médicinales.

Après vingt-cinq années de photographie dédiée

à l'Asie, Jean-Dominique Burton parcourt

l'Afrique depuis le début des années 2000. Il en

dévoile la richesse des civilisations et la beauté

du patrimoine.

Dès le début, l'ensemble de ses projets africains

est soutenu par la Fondation Zinsou, rejoint récemment

par la Fondation George Arthur Forrest,

et révèle un regard résolument positif sur

l'Afrique.

The Nagô Hunters of the Bantè Kingdom, established

in the fourteenth century, form a brotherhood

of hunters, placed under the authority of a

traditional King. The Kingdom is located in the

heart of Benin, in the Bantè forest, the Collines

Department. The 27 villages of the Kingdom

comprise Chiefs Hunters. At the expense of hunting

great game, now abandoned, the Hunters

have become the essential players in the conservation

of their environment, through defending

the Bantè Forest on one hand and through protecting

their cultural heritage on the other. Guardians

of a rich tradition intimately linked with

the forest, the Nagô Hunters notably conserve an

exceptional knowledge of treatments based on

the use of medicinal plants.

Since the beginning of the 2000's, after 25 years

dedicated to Asia, Jean-Dominique Burton travels

all over Africa, revealing the wealth of civilisations

and the beauty of their heritage. Jean-Dominique

Burton's vision of Africa is steadfastly

positive.

His African projects have always been supported

by the Zinsou Foundation, recently joined by the

Fondation George Arthur Forrest.
