The Château de Chantilly is famous for its historical French paintings, but also houses an important collection of photographs. The château's Condé Museum has preserved approximately 1400 prints, mostly dating from the second half of the 19th century. The Duke of Aumale's collection highlights the different photographic trends of the 19th century, starting with the pioneer generation of the 1850s - Baldus, Gustave Le Gray, and Roger Fenton - and continuing to the end of the century, with the first amateur photographs by his nephew Robert of Orléans, Duke of Chartres, and the beginnings of industnal photography.
