Photovoltaic systems, which convert sunlight to electricity, are expected to have increasingly important markets in the electric power sector. Over time, niche markets may expand from stand-alone systems in isolation from the electric grid, to distributed systems which are connected to the grid, to large-scale centralized systems operated by utilities.
