A practical approach to the phonetics and phonology of english sets out to provide the teacher and student of English with a means of examining the sounds of contemporary spoken English. Given that until recently too little emphasis has been laid on scrupulously correct pronunciation, with the result that far too many students have been entering Higher Education with a less than satisfactory standard of spoken English, remedial work has been generally necessary. Moreover, those entering the teaching profession need to be made aware of the mechanics of correct articulation, so that they, in turn, will be able to help their future pupils. The course begins with a basic examination of speech-sound production ; the description and classification of the sounds of RP English ; exercises allowing students to compare phonemes, and remedy obvious errors or imprecisions ; a study of the all-important word stress and sentence stress in English ; an analysis of basic intonation patterns ; and finally an attempt to allow the student to become aware of varieties of spoken English other than the "classic" RP dialect which is the norm generally aimed at.

Le but de A practical approach to the phonetics and phonology of english est de fournir au professeur et à l'étudiant d'anglais (niveau DEUG) un moyen pratique d'étudier la phonétique et la phonologie de l'anglais contemporain. L'auteur, ayant une longue expérience de l'enseignement de cette discipline, ne pouvait que déplorer la qualité de la prononciation d'un grand nombre d'étudiants qui accédaient à l'enseignement supérieur. Ce cours propose une étude des mécanismes de la production des phonèmes de l'anglais (RP), une analyse et un classement de ces phonèmes ; une série d'exercices pratiques pour analyse et correction des fautes acquises ; l'analyse de l'intonation de l'anglais, après une étude de l'accent de mot et de phrase. Pour être en mesure d'aider ses futurs élèves, l'enseignant en herbe doit pouvoir leur expliquer ces mécanismes de base. L'expérience a montré qu'il est important aussi d'attirer l'attention de l'étudiant sur les variations régionales de l'anglais parlé.
