Je connais et j'aime le travail de David Thelim depuis des années. Je

suis sensible à son approche picturale du réel, à ses talents de coloriste,

de dessinateur. La plupart du temps, on décèle dans ses oeuvres un

antagonisme, une forme d'anarchie, mais une anarchie maîtrisée au

service d'une peinture sombre, profonde, et pourtant joyeuse. Lorsqu'il

exposa à la galerie Patrick Bartoli, ce qui me frappa fut cette cohérence

immédiate d'un ensemble ordonné dans une parfaite harmonie.

L'accrochage donnait une résonance aux tableaux de l'artiste, il laissait

deviner une compréhension réciproque. L'idée de faire un livre avec le

galeriste et le peintre s'imposa assez vite, comme une obligation de

témoigner de ces forces conjuguées. Au même titre que Patrick Bartoli se

veut passeur d'émotions, relayeur de ses propres choix, je voulais me faire

l'écho de cet événement afin d'inciter à la découverte de David Thelim,

de son goût prononcé pour la multitude organisée dans le désordre, de

sa lutte entre l'instinct et la raison, entre le doute et l'affirmation. Ce livre

retrace le parcours de cette démarche collective.

I've known and loved David Thelim's work for years. I'm sensitive as

much to his pictorial approach to reality as to his talents as a colourist

and draftsman. Most of the time, one can discern an antagonism in his

works, a form of anarchy, a controlled anarchy in the service of an output

that is at once deep and sombre and at the same time joyful. I was struck

at his show at the Galerie Patrick Bartoli by the immediate coherence

forming a perfectly harmonious orderly whole. The hanging echoed the

artist's paintings in a way that spoke of a strong mutual comprehension.

The idea of putting out a book with the gallerist and the painter quickly

became compelling, as a means of testifying to this combined strength.

Like Patrick Bartoli, who regards it as his vocation to transmit his choices

to others, I wanted to help bring David Thelim's work to a wider public

and foster an appreciation of his pronounced predilection for multitudes

organized in disorder and the struggle between instinct and reason and

between doubt and affirmation that informs his output. This book retraces

a collective journey.
