If the transformation of the Hungarian economy has accelerated since 1989, it is a direct result of the reform measures taken since 1968. These previous reform measures and Hungary's greater openness to commerce with OECD countries, in comparison with some other East European countries, were important sources of strength in restructuring Hungarian industry and reorienting it towards world markets
