The earth's biological diversity, or "biodiversity" in its widest sense is synonymous with "life on earth." Its loss has become an international concern in recent years and has led to the rapid ratification of the Convention on Biological Diversity, one of three international environmental treaties signed at the United Nations "Earth Summit" at Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
