La Suisse à vol d'oiseau
Cette lithographie de 1915 figure le Suisse vue depuis les rives allemandes du lac de Constance, selon un axe médian Constance-Saint-Moritz traversant monts et prairies jusqu'au lac d'Iseo en Italie. La confédération helvétique, alors cernée par les belligérants de la Première Guerre mondiale, commence à se penser comme une « île » qu'il faut préserver d'une « inondation » étrangère. la photo aérienne, développée par toutes les puissances militaires depuis le début du XX<sup>e</sup> siècle, n'a pas été utilisée pour la réalisation de cette « vue d'oiseau », due à la seule imagination de graphistes-géographes.
A bird's-eye view of Switzerland
This 1915 lithograph shows Switzerland seen from the German shores of Lake Constance, along a centre line from Constance to Saint-Moritz, crossing mountains and meadows to lake Iseo in Italy. The Swiss Confederation, then surrounded by the belligerents of the first world war, was beginning to think of itself as an « island » that had to be preserved from a foreign « flood ». Aerial photography, developed by military powers everywhere from the beginning of the 20th century onwards, was not used to make this « bird's- eye view », which was due only to the imagination of geographer draughtsmen.
