Chen Shaoxiong

Né à Shantou dans la province de Guangdong (Chine), Chen Shaoxiong (1962-2016) a vécu et travaillé à Guangzhou et à Pékin. Il s'est formé à l'art de l'encre à l'Académie des Beaux-arts de Guangzhou. Son oeuvre puise ses racines dans cette région, proclamée marché semi-libre dans le cadre de la réforme économique menée par Deng Xiaoping au début des années 1980. Les oeuvres de Chen Shaoxiong interrogent l'impact sur la population de l'urbanisation rapide de la Chine du sud. Idéologie, réalité, identité, mémoire collective et individuelle font partie de ses thèmes privilégiés.

Son travail est autant plébiscité en Chine qu'à l'étranger, avec des expositions au MoMA PS1 à New York, au Mori Art Museum à Tokyo, au Pékin Fine Arts à Beijing, au M+ à Hong Kong, en Corée du Sud, à la Kunsthalle de Berne, au Hamburger Bahnhof de Berlin, à la Biennale de Venise et au Holland Animation Film Festival à Utrecht, entre autres.

Chen Shaoxiong (1962-2016, born in Shantou, Guangdong province) lived and worked in Guangzhou and Beijing. He followed the Ink-art training at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. His work is deeply rooted in the region, which was proclaimed a semi-free market at an early stage, as part of Deng Xiaoping's policy of reform in the early 1980s. Related to the rapid urbanisation in South-China, Chen Shaoxiong's work examines its effects on the population. Ideology and reality, identity, collective and personal memories constitute a main theme.

His work was acclaimed both at home and abroad. Exhibited in MoMA, PS1 and International Center of Photography in New York, Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), Péking Fine Arts and M+ in Hong Kong, South Korea, Kunsthalle (Bern), Hamburger Bahnhof (Berlin), Venice Biennale, Holland Animation Film Festival (Utrecht) and many other places.
