The chasseurs à cheval owe their

name to Jean-Chrétien Fischer who

wanted to recover the French mounts

stolen by the Austrian Hussars. He went off

"chasing the mounts". And so began the

little war for Chasseurs began...

Barely fifty years later the Chasseur à

Cheval embodied all the spirit of the new

Republic and the quintessential revolutionary

soldier, and determined all the virtues of the

light trooper or infantryman à la française

in military minds, explaining the tactical and

strategic successes and mistakes the head-quarters

staff made during the two centuries

that followed.

In this first volume, Ludovic Letrun depicts

the French Chasseurs à cheval from the first

regulations to the eve of the Empire.
