The main disadvantages of the existing two-stroke engines are : its low efficiency and high level of pollutant emission.

A new generation of highly efficient low-emission two-stroke engines is emerging from research and development work carried out all over the world. The concept of replacing the conventional automotive four-stroke by a new, light, compact two-stroke engine could even be considered.

Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) has been involved in the development of new two-stroke engine concepts since 1980 and has decided to organize in Rueil-Malmaison an International Seminar on future two-stroke engine technology and its application. Topics covered range from the use of scientific tools in engine design to future two-stroke engine operating conditions.

This seminar provided an opportunity for experts from the automotive industry, the small engines sector and their subcontractors, and research institutes to exchange views on the chance of success for this new generation of two-stroke engines.
