À travers son travail, Cheick Diallo (né au Mali en 1960) ressuscite les matériaux

pauvres qu'il trouve dans son pays natal : métal de récupération, plastique,

papier d'emballage, tissu, bois, terres, pour réaliser du mobilier et des objets

fonctionnels et décoratifs résolument contemporains. Ses pièces, qu'il produit

lui-même, sont réalisées sur place, à la main par des artisans locaux, car ce

designer est un entrepreneur qui contribue à l'économie du pays et son design

est indissociable d'un engagement «citoyen». Ses créations reflètent donc une

identité forte, liée aux savoir-faire traditionnels de l'artisanat local, mais Diallo

ne se laisse pas enfermer dans l'enveloppe du designer africain puisque ses

objets sont absolument utilitaires et adaptés à des besoins usuels et universels.

Cette première monographie de Cheick Diallo, en donnant la parole à des

spécialistes du design et de l'art contemporain africain, mais surtout à ses objets,

présente une rétrospective de son travail depuis une vingtaine d'années.

Born in Mali in 1960, Cheick Diallo resuscitates humble materials found

in his homeland - scrap metal, plastic, packaging paper, cloth, wood and earth -

to create functional and decorative objects and furniture of an

uncompromisingly contemporary character. The articles, which he produces

himself, are handmade on the spot by local craftsmen, because this designer

is an entrepreneur who contributes to the country's economy and his work

is inseparably linked to his civic commitment. While his creations thus reflect

a strong identity connected with the traditional skills of local handicrafts,

Diallo cannot be restrictively pigeonholed as an African designer because

his objects are wholly functional and serve common, universal needs.

This initial monographic study on Cheick Diallo, seen through the eyes

of specialists in African contemporary art and design but above all through

the objects themselves, presents an overview of the work of the last twenty years.
