Tae Chosŏn Chido

Ce Cheonhado (« carte du monde sous le ciel ») de 1874 est l'un des derniers spécimens d'une tradition coréenne remontant au XVII^e siècle. Peu soucieux de géographie réelle, le jido (« peinture de pays ») semble montrer un continent intérieur, la Chine et ses voisins ; autour, une mer intérieure piquetée d'îles avec des descriptions taoïstes ; puis un continent extérieur, le reste du monde, et une autre mer. Mais certains spécialistes attribuent à ces feuilles populaires une origine occidentale détournée : au centre, l'Asie, l'Afrique et l'Europe ; autour, les divers océans avec leurs îles ; puis le continent nord et sud- américain en cercle.

Tae Chosŏn Chido

This Cheonhado (« map of the world under the sky ») dating from 1874 is one of the last specimens of a korean tradition dating back to the 17th century. With little concern for geographic reality, the jido (« country painting ») seems to show an inland continent, china and its neighbours ; surrounding it, an inland sea dotted with islands with taoist descriptions ; then an external continent, the rest of the world, and another sea. But certain specialists attribute to these popular sheets a misappropriation of western origin : in the centre, Asia, Africa and Europe ; surrounding them, the various oceans with their islands ; then a single North and South American continent forming a circle.
